Resistance training involves the use of free weights, resistance machines and actual body weight to either increase muscle size or improve muscle tone. If your goal is to increase muscle size, the programme will use a low volume: high intensity approach. That is, a heavy weight, lifted 3-5 times, and repeated 2 or 3 times. For improvements in muscle tone and reduction in body fat, the opposite is applied and a light weight will be lifted 15-20 times.
